Interactive Map Gallery

MAPS! MAPS! MAPS!  We love maps.   I love to build maps in my spare time to help visualize the data that I am interested in.  If you have a feature request or a different map you’d like to see, let me know! There are many more assorted interactive maps I need to post, so check back regularly for new maps. Most of these are built with the arcgis jsapi 4.x   Some are built on the old google maps api and leaflet api’s.  Most data is available on request.

Utah Geology Interactive Geology App

The Utahgeology All-in-one geology app puts all the available geologic sections of Utahgeology.com into one fullscreen mapping application.  Within this app you can access paleogeography maps and animations, geologic units/formations for the entire united states, geologic road guides for Utah and the Colorado plateau, geologic images and stratigraphic columns for the whole country.  Check it out and play around, and check back regularly as it is under constant development.

Utah Geology Interactive Map Application for viewing geology of utah

Utah Interactive Geologic Map Viewer

Navigate and download Utah geologic maps. Made by Lance Weaver at the Utah Geological Survey. With this map you can view utah’s geologic formations, see geologic descriptions for utah’s units, and download geologic maps.

World Earthquake Explorer

The World Earthquake Explorer displays nearly every significant or major historical earthquake as well, as giving access to all Magnitude 3.0 and greater earthquakes from the past 12 months.  (Directly from USGS servers, and up to date).  Allows filtering on magnitude as well as seeing historical earthquake trends, such as whether earthquake activity is increasing or decreasing.

Covid-19 (Coronavirus) Comparison Map

Compare the spread of Covid-19 Coronavirus to other common illnesses, such as Influenza and pneumonia.  See daily death and new cases as well as daily historical statistics.  Check out how Covid-19 compares to other causes of death such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other major killers.  Use the graphs to see the daily changes in coronavirus numbers, as well as how it compares with a baseline of IFI (influenza like illness).  Data comes from the following sources….

3D World Earthquakes

View the earthquakes from the past 12 months visualized by depth of epicenter on a 3D globe. Depths are exaggerated 20x in order to be able to better visualize the differences in depth between continental and subduction fault zones.  Note how earthquakes occur predominately on plate boundaries.

North American Archaeological Site Viewer

The North American archaeological site viewer is an application which visualizes our database of nearly every major archaeological site in North America. You can view Mayan archaeological sites, Anasazi (ancient Puebloan), Aztec, Adena, Hopewell and the locations of many other prehistoric North American archaeological sites.

Utah Trails Map App

With the UtahGeology Utah Trails Map Viewer you can explore both Southern Utah Trails and Northern Utah trails.  Trail lines can be visualized in both 2D or a 3D map, with trailheads, Utah arches, and Utah slot canyons.

Utah & U.S. Fire Data

Application for viewing both current fires in the Western United States, as well as polygons for historic fires in Utah. Utah Geology Earth Resources Observation and Science Center, in conjunction with the US Forest Service Pacific Southwest Region, has developed several new products for understanding and forecasting the probability of large wildland fires on all land in the conterminous U.S. This interactive map shows current & past fire conditions.

Grand Canyon Backcountry Permit Helper

I built this app as an aid to getting backcountry permits for the Grand Canyon. Which are a pain in the Arse, because the permits are filed under the backcountry use area codes, and its hard to know what the codes are and where they are for. With this map, you can filter or search the codes in the side-table, click on it and see exactly where its at. Be sure to read the splash screen instructions CAREFULLY.  Links to permit url are there. (open)

North American Fossil Locality Map

This Google-maps-like interactive map fossil collection localities found in North America from University of Madison Wisconsin’s Fossil Databases. Sensitive sites are not exact locations. The color indicates the Geologic Period of origin. Click on the geologic periods in the left table (desktop) to filter sites by geologic time period. Click on individual sites for collection name, location, intervals, and dates. For more detail, zoom in the map.  (open)
